How to Draw A Cartoon Birthday Cake filled with colors
Draw a fun, but complex cartoon birthday cake using this vector drawing tutorial. Birthday cakes are often depicted with multiple layers and filled with tons of decorations and candles. In this tutorial, I will show you how to draw a simple one made from basic shapes, but complex digital effects.
Our goal is to come up with a delicious cake rather than trying to create something complex. If you already know how to use a vector application, then you should not have any trouble duplicating this lesson. Of course, you can also try a more complex version once you are familiar with all nine steps available below.
Do you like this illustration? Good news! It can be yours now! Learn how :)
Step 1
First, let's sketch the cake using basic shapes and lines. For this example, five candles were added. Keep some space in the middle to include the text as seen in the next step.
Step 2
Next, add plain colors using mostly bright tones like red, green, blue and pink. Notice that the outlines are now gone and won't be needed for the rest of this tutorial. Why? Simply because the illustration should look more realistic without them. Draw the text using lines.
Step 3
Select the gradient fill tool (or a similar tool if your vector application doesn't have one) and add a second color to each element of the drawing. For instance, the pink shape is darker on the bottom and bright on top. Repeat the same technique on all shapes.
Step 4
It's now time to add some cool effects on this birthday cake. First, draw a white circular shape on top of all candles. You can see these new shapes with the blue outlines (which are only used to let you know where the circles must be added). Play with the opacity of these new elements to create a subtle effect.
Step 5
Next, draw a bright yellow shape inside each flames. On top of the candles, you can also add a large circular shape. In both cases, use transparency to make these new elements softer and more subtle.
Step 6
In this step, you can draw new shapes filled with darker colors to create a few shadows. You can draw circles below the candles. You can duplicate the text and make the new version darker (and place it below the original one).
Step 7
Once again, let's add more darker shapes to create even more shadows and even more volume to the illustration. On the bottom of each candle, draw a long shadow made of rectangles. On the left side of the cake, draw two additional shapes like shown below.
Step 8
In this final step, draw bright shapes to create highlights. You can start by drawing a large circle on top of the cake. Then, duplicate the cake itself (the brown section) and change the color to white. Repeat the same step for the plate. Use transparency to partially hide these new elements.
A nice cartoon birthday cake ready to be served! :)
Nice work! This cartoon birthday cake looks really delicious. It's now time to build your own cake and enjoy the freedom to create a calorie-free cake filled with great colors and textures.
Hopefully you can now draw more fun cakes quickly and easily using all the tips you have learned in this tutorial. You are also invited to try more delicious treats from this site using the lessons found below. Have fun drawing and don't forget to practice on a daily basis.
